Belfour to Sweden; Aubin to L.A. Kings

It looks like the only goalies left on the market are Curtis Joseph, Sean Burke, and Robert Esche. As mentioned in yesterday's article, if the Rangers are serious about signing a backup goaltender for Henrik Lundqvist, it would be better if it happened soon due to the dwindling options.

Updated: Aubin signed for 525K a season. That gives you an idea of how little it would take to sign a goaltender.

If the Rangers intended to sign a goalie it probably would have happened already. Here's an idea, however: why not trade Montoya for a solid defenseman and a backup goalie, with the trading team picking up a little of the salary former's salary? Seems like it'd be a good deal all around.

Believe it or not, teams are no longer allowed to pick up part of any salary under the new collective bargaining agreement. The only contracts in which that can occur is if they were agreed to before the new CBA was signed (ie. Washington still paying half of Jagr's contract).

The suggested deal does sound like it makes sense, but solid defensemen are tough to come by in today's game. Unfortunately, it would probably take more than Montoya to net one (ie. Jovanovski).

Wow, I had no idea that was the case. I think that makes the NHL the only major league not to allow such schemes.

I don't want Jovo. He reminds me of the hired gun journeymen that the Rangers acquired in the late 90's and the first half of this decade for one quick push to the Cup. It never works out and the Rangers give up too much.

There has to be a team out there willing to trade an offensive-minded defenseman for a young, near sure thing starting goalie.
